Is Clinical Pilates Right for You? What to Know Before You Book
If you have been dealing with an injury, chronic pain, or a condition that affects how you move, you may have heard the term "Clinical Pilates" and wondered if it is different from a regular Reformer class. The short answer is yes, and understanding the difference can help you figure out which is the right fit for you right now.
What Is Clinical Pilates?
Clinical Pilates is a specialized form of Pilates led by a physiotherapist who has completed dedicated Pilates equipment training. This means they bring both their clinical knowledge of the body and a deep understanding of how to use the Reformer and other Pilates apparatus to support your specific needs. Unlike a group Reformer class, Clinical Pilates sessions are one on one and are designed entirely around your body, history, and goals.
At Core Community, our Clinical Pilates sessions are led by a physiotherapist who assesses how you move, identifies any imbalances or areas of concern, and builds a program tailored specifically to you. It is much more targeted than a general Pilates class, and that is exactly the point.
Who Is It For?
Clinical Pilates tends to be a great fit if you are recovering from a surgery or injury, managing a chronic condition like back pain, hip issues, or pelvic floor dysfunction, postpartum and looking for safe, supported movement, experiencing pain that has been limiting your regular workouts, or wanting to move better and prevent future injury.
It is also a good option if you have tried group Pilates classes and felt unsure about whether certain movements were right for your body. In a Clinical session, there is no guessing. Everything is guided by someone who understands your specific needs.
What to Expect at Your First Session
Your first Clinical Pilates session at Core Community will typically begin with an assessment. Your physiotherapist will ask about your history, what has been bothering you, and what you are hoping to get out of the sessions. From there, they will guide you through movement on the Reformer and other Pilates equipment, paying close attention to how your body responds.
You do not need any Pilates experience to start. You just need to show up and be honest about where you are at.
How Often Should You Come?
One of the great things about Clinical Pilates is that it is flexible. Some people come weekly as part of their recovery or maintenance routine, while others drop in as needed when something flares up or they want a check in. Your physiotherapist will help you figure out what makes sense for your body and your goals.
