What to Look for in a Pilates Teacher Training Program
So you're thinking about becoming a Pilates instructor — hell yes. Teacher training is a meaningful investment in yourself and your future career, and choosing the right program makes all the difference. With so many options in Vancouver, it can be hard to know where to start.
Here are four things we think matter most when choosing a Pilates teacher training program.
1. The Instructors
The quality of your training starts with the people teaching it. Ask yourself: what is this instructor's background, and how long have they been teaching? Have they worked with a wide range of bodies and movement challenges? Are they genuinely invested in your growth as a teacher — not just moving you through a checklist?
The best way to know if an instructor is right for you? Take their class first. Feel how they cue, how they correct, how they hold space. Their teaching style will shape yours, so make sure it resonates.
2. The Program
Not all teacher training programs are created equal. Look for a program that is accredited by a recognized body (such as ITTAP an equivalent), has a strong reputation in the Pilates community, and uses teaching manuals and materials that have been developed by true experts in the field.
A well-structured program will cover anatomy, biomechanics, cueing, modifications, and hands-on practice — not just the exercises themselves.
3. Support and Mentorship
Training doesn't end when your course hours are done. One of the most important (and often overlooked) things to ask about is what happens after your training. Can you practice teach in the studio? Do you have access to the equipment and facilities to build your hours? Is there an instructor available to answer questions and guide you as you grow?
The transition from student to teacher is real. Having mentorship and a supportive environment during that phase is invaluable.
4. Community
You'll spend hundreds of hours learning, moving, and growing in this program. The community you train in matters. Look for a place that feels like home — somewhere you're excited to walk into, where the energy is positive, and where you can see yourself continuing to grow long after graduation.
The best teacher training programs don't just create instructors. They create lifelong movement practitioners who love what they do.
